I.R.S. - More Rules

Standard Deduction
If you take the standard deduction, and are single, you already are credited with having $5,150 in deductions for casualty losses, interest, other named expenses, and for charitable contributions. Public Charity
Gifts to public charity such as Tree House Books are deductible up to 50 percent of your adjusted gross income if you itemize.
Gifts other Than Cash
Gifts of services are not deductible. Travel to a charity can be added to the value of your gift at 14 cents a mile. Other gifts to Tree House Books must be accepted in a letter that sets forth the value of the gifted items.
