Tree Shade is a unique summer project designed for kids ages 7-16 that lasts six weeks, Tuesday through Thursday from 1pm to 3:30pm. Our Tree Shade Project begins on Tuesday, July 5th and will come to a close on Friday, August 12th with an End-of-Camp Party to celebrate the accomplishments of our campers!
Each year, Tree Shade campers and staff combine their efforts, skills, and talents to breathe life into a summer-long project. For our fourth camp anniversary, Summer 2011 campers will learn what it means to be an artist, a gardener, and a chef through our Canvas and Plate Institute. The project, will take the kids “Beyond Ordinary Art & Cooking” and help provide them with the necessary tools to become empowered self-nourishers. Through reading, writing, the arts, cooking with real chefs, and taking field trips to view public art pieces, everyone will work together with the shared goal of re-imagining the city. Campers will learn to communicate their ideas, cooperate as members of the community, and feel empowered as stewards of their environment.

Then, Tree Shade campers will work in partnership with Urban Blazers to explore natural landmarks in Philadelphia, the Village of Arts and Humanities through their Farm Share program, and Glenwood Green Acres. They’ll be guided to take their new experiences and the skills they’ve developed while transforming the green space in Tree House’s own backyard.
Campers will also learn from guest artists how to use food, natural dyes, sculpture, photography, and mosaics to create an art instillation at Tree House Books.
Price: $30 for 6-week program

“We play games and we read books in the tree house. Tree House is fun. The people that come to Tree House are nice. The people that work at Tree House are nice and polite, and they use their manners. People feel happy to be here and for everything.”
—Shahada, age 8
